Billionaire Jeff Bezos has made a short journey to space
Jeff Bezos has become the second billionaire this month to reach the
edge of space, and he did so aboard a rocket built by a company he
launched.
Wearing a cowboy hat under the West Texas morning sun, Jeff Bezos
crossed the bridge to enter the capsule made by his company Blue Origin.
He was accompanied by three others – his brother Mark Bezos, female
aviation pioneer Wally Funk and 18-year-old Oliver Daemen.
The founder of Amazon, who stepped down as CEO this month, lifted off
early Tuesday with three crewmates on the maiden flight of Blue Origin's
New Shepard launch vehicle.
They travelled in a capsule with the biggest windows flown in space, offering stunning views of the Earth.
When the capsule touched back down after the 10-minute, 10-second flight, Jeff Bezos exclaimed: "Best day ever!"
However, Mr Bezos insists he has an environmental vision: "We need to
take all heavy industry, all polluting industry and move it into space,
and keep Earth as this beautiful gem of a planet that it is.
